LONDON - Global miner Anglo American Plc said on Thursday it had formed an alliance with Shell Gas & Power International in converting coal to clean energy.

Anglo said in a statement that the aim was "to maximise the benefits from the emerging field of clean coal energy by taking selective equity positions in coal conversion projects".

The projects would make use of Anglo's coal reserves and combine its mining capabilities with Royal Dutch Shell's technologies, with the object to extract, gasify and convert coal into chemicals, hydrogen, power, liquid hydrocarbons and other uses.

Anglo said that burning the resulting gas from coal emits much lower amounts of greenhouse gases and pollutants than traditional coal burning.

"The ability of Anglo American and Shell to form a clean coal energy alliance .... will create a sustainable competitive advantage, whilst creating value for shareholders of both the alliance partners," Anglo Chief Executive Tony Trahar said.
