Published by MAC on 2006-03-26Nicanor Alvarado Carrasco, a community leader and environmental campaigner,representing VIMA of Peru, began a European tour last week with a meeting at the UK House of Commons addressing the community crisis triggered by Monterrico Metals's Rio Blanco mining concession. On March 30 he will deliver similar testimony to the European Parliament in Brussels. Nicanor Carrasco is demanding the Peruvian government "promotes and prioritises sustainable agriculture, agribusiness, and eco-tourism before mining activity, as a source of generating employment without polluting the environment".
