Peruvian police have arrested at least 30 demonstrators in the Ancash region. The protesters set up a highway blockade to demand greater authority over mining and infrastructure projects. The blockade stranded hundreds of vehicles and paralyzed commercial activity in the Nuevo Chimbote district Wednesday.
Ancash regional president Cesar Alvarez says he agrees with the demonstrators who are demanding local governments be given a greater share of mining revenues from the region.
The protesters also want the central government to transfer control of an irrigation project to local authorities and to complete various infrastructure projects.
