13th June 2006
Marches, forums and community meetings were part of the Central American Week of Resistance Against Mining Activities, during which environmental activists sought to pressure their governments in order to stop the metal extraction activities.
As part of the actions, there was a march in Guatemala City which ended up in front of the Canadian Embassy, the nation that is home to many of the mining companies which operate in this country. At the end of the week a march was carried out in Sipacapa, San Marcos, against the project Marlin of the company Montana, a subsidiary of Canadian mining firm Glamis Gold. Similar activities were carried out in Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua, countries which share similar experiences regarding mining operations.
