George Forrest files lawsuit against Broederlijk Delen and 11.11.11
by Broederlijk Delen, Brussels
19th May 2006
Buisnessman George Forrest is demanding damages of Euro 300,000 from Broederlijk Delen, 11.11.11 and British organization Rights and Accountability in Development (RAID). The motive is the Memorandum On Good Government and Accountability in the Congolese Mining Sector, which these development organizations sent to Belgian foreign minister, De Gucht, last February. The memorandum concerns two joint ventures of the Belgian state company Gécamines with private entities, one of whom is the company Kinross Forrest. The three organizations deplore the position of Mr. Forrest. They emphasize at the same time they continue to clamor for the proper management of natural resources in Congo. Broederlijk Delen, 11.11.11 and RAID have been been ordered to appear before the civil courts in Brussels on June 15, 2006. George Forrest blames the organizations for divulging false and injurious information and is demanding Euro 300,000 in damages.
Broederlijk Delen, 11.11.11 and RAID deplore the reaction of Mr. Forrest. Their arguments for proper management of the natural resources of Congo are based in serious investigations. As organizations of cooperation in development, these organizations believe that the immense natural resources of the country should be used to lift the population from poverty. They call upon Belgium and other international actors to assume responsibility for this. The three organizations will continue to struggle for a democratic Congo which can use its economic resources for its own development.
