Indonesia's mining Oscars
The Indonesian government's "Proper" (sic) programme aims at assessing extractive companies' environmental performance. It's a ham-fisted process with no legal muscle to back it and condemned by some NGOs as flawed and almost meaningless. In its latest report the programme gives a "green card" to KPC (formerly managed by Rio Tinto and BP) and Newmont, but slams a "red" card on Inco and PT Antam. No company was awarded the coveted "golden" globe.
