Australia's government backs India's uranium power
16th August 2007
Last week the Indian prime minister, Manmohan Singh, unabashedly announced that his government would resume testing of nuclear weapons. This severely embarrassed the US administration, following recent Congress ratification of a joint India-US nuclear cooperation treaty.
At the same time, the right wing Australian government has said it will lift the ban on uranium exports to India. It's foreign minister preposterously asserts that, since India already has nuclear weapons already, "proliferation risks are smaller."
However, the present administration down-under may well do precisely that, following the pending Australian national elections.
