The world must watch out , says global environmental think tank
14th September 2007
Widely recognised as the premier US "think tank" on the health of the planet and its inhabitants, the World Watch Institute (WWI) last week warned that the majority of global trends last year were negative.
Not surprisingly, the Institute noted that the US was the prime culprit in unacceptable consumption of fossil fuels, although China and India are fast catching up.
Steel and aluminium output reached record levels in 2006, with the latter now consuming around 3% of global electricity output.
What is somewhat surprising is that the WWI's press statement, announcing the report doesn't highlight the growing role of coal in increasing global greenhouse gas emissions - both for electricity and smelting. (40% of US power supply is derived from the black stuff.)
