by Toronto Globe and Mail
Kyrgyzstan has launched a tax-evasion investigation against Centerra Gold Inc.'s Kumtor mine in the Kyrgyz Republic, claiming the mine had evaded taxes since 2003. Turatbek Masybayev, head of the tax police investigation division, said yesterday that the Kumtor mine had evaded taxes since 2003, causing "injury to the state of a very great size."
He said the exact sum had not been determined. Centerra, whose majority shareholder is Cameco Corp., is focused on acquiring and operating gold properties primarily in Central Asia, the former Soviet Union and other emerging markets. Centerra officials were not immediately available for comment yesterday. CG (TSX) rose 7 cents to $15.32.
