Mining Claims Pouring into Chaitén Volcanic Region

On May 12 2008, nine days after the beginning of the eruption of the Chaitén volcano in southern Chile, a woman living in the city of Temuco named Veronica Maricela Garces Perez began the legal paperwork covering Mining Claims over 17,600 hectares for mining exploration.

Coincidentally, these mining requests are focused exclusively on the zone directly affected by the eruption activity of the volcano Chaitén. The requests range from the Río Blanco to the north, to Río Negro in the south, at the center of which s the active Chaitén volcano.

While authorities and bureaucrats try to take political advantage of this emergency situation at the expense of the residents of the province of Palena, some Chilean citizens, working as "mercenaries" for Endesa España, the Canadian firm Transelec, and for other foreign mining firms, have begun to initiate the "legal" plunder of this southern zone, to assure their hydroelectric and mining projects, without regard to the irreparable damage that the residents and environment of the region will suffer, the loss of properties, way of life and tourism economy that sustained them.

The Mining Code is the strongest law in the country: when it is applied, the corporations are guaranteed total control over the subsoil and at the end, the overlying, leaving the residents of the country without protection.

Mayor: Authorization granted to enter Chaitén is "irresponsible"

The mayor of the municipality, José Miguel Fritis, maintains that the evacuees' "right to life" should be first priority.

SANTIAGO.- The Mayor of Chaitén, José Miguel Fritis, has referred to the Supreme Court decision to allow access to the town devastated by the volcanic eruption and flooding of the Blanco River, as "absolutely irresponsible".

During a conversation with Radio Cooperativa, the mayor stated: "Article 41 of the Constitution needs to be applied", since the first priority is to "look after the lives of the people". Yesterday, more than 400 evacuees were forced to return to Puerto Montt and Castro without being able to salvage their possessions due to a wind storm that kept them from disembarking from the boats they were traveling in. Additionally, waves caused a small vessel carrying five passengers on their way to Chaitén to flip over.

Southern Chile's Chaiten Volcano, which erupted in early May for the first time in recorded history (PT, May 2), is once again making its presence felt. Local news agencies reported Thursday that the now two-month-long, on and off again eruption has intensified significantly in the past 24 hours with the volcano once again began belching massive amounts of ash. The new eruption has also been accompanied by notable seismic activity.

Chaiten first came to life on May 2, emitting a massive cloud of ash that blanketed surrounding areas and forced the total evacuation of a nearby town of the same name. Chaiten the town, in fact, has suffered devastation of biblical proportions, damaged first by the falling ash and later by widespread flooding. Authorities recently allowed a few residents to return to Chaiten in order to begin cleanup efforts. The volcano's increased activity, however, may lead to yet another evacuation.

Pasados solo 9 dias desde el inicio de la erupcion del Volcán Chaiten, una mujer domiciliada en la ciudad de Temuco, llamada Veronica Maricela Garces Perez, en la mañana del dia 12 de mayo del 2008, inicio en la ciudad de Puerto Montt las gestiones legales de Pedimentos Mineros por 17.600 hectareas distribuidas en 84 solicitudes de exploración Minera. Coincidentemente, estos pedimentos mineros estan focalizados exclusiamente en la zona de exclusion por la actividad eruptiva del Volcan Chaiten. El pedimento abarcan desde Río Blanco por el Norte, hasta Río Negro por el sur, y como centro es el activo Volcán Chaitén.

Mientras las autoridades y burócratas tratan de sacar el mayor provecho politico a esta situacion de emergencia a costa de los pobladores de la Provincia de Palena, unos ciudadanos chilenos, trabajando "mercenariamente" para Endesa España, la canadiense Transelec y para algunas corporaciones mineras extranjeras, han comenzado a expoliar "legalmente" esta zona austral, para asegurar sus proyectos hidroeletricos y mineros, sin importar el daño irreparable que sufriran los habitantes de esta zona, la pérdida de sus propiedades, su estilo de vida y las economias turística que los sustenta. El Código Minero, es la ley mas fuerte de este pais, y al realizar su aplicación, las corporaciones garantizan el control total del subsuelo y por ende de la propiedad superficial, y dejan indefensos a los habitantes.

Reactivación de volcanes preocupa en Chile, intenso monitoreo

SANTIAGO - La fuerte reactivación el fin de semana de dos volcanes en el sur de Chile, que hace poco pusieron en alerta al país, ha vuelto a preocupar a las autoridades, que monitorean de cerca el comportamiento de los macizos.

El volcán Llaima, a unos 700 kilómetros al sur de Santiago, hizo erupción a inicios de este año. Tras cinco meses de calma retomó su actividad por algunos días a principios de julio y tarde el sábado registró explosiones, emisión de cenizas y escurrimiento de lava, según la Oficina Nacional de Emergencias (Onemi). El domingo la actividad se había moderado, pero la zona se mantenía la alerta, según la Onemi.

En tanto, los expertos han advertido sobre la reciente actividad del volcán Chaitén, que en mayo obligó a la evacuación de todo un pueblo tras entrar en fase eruptiva.

En los últimos días se han sentido temblores y ruidos subterráneos en la zona cercana al macizo y el vulcanólogo Jorge Muñoz aseguró que podría estar produciéndose una inyección de magma y una obstrucción en el conducto principal del volcán.

"Eso significa que en algún momento, en el plazo de días, uno podría tener una reactivación del volcán a través de una explosión importante que liberara la obstrucción del conducto y que, con la nueva inyección de magma desde el interior, se generara una actividad eruptiva superficial mayor," dijo Muñoz a la radio local Cooperativa.

Chile posee la segunda cadena volcánica más grande y de mayor actividad en el mundo, después de Indonesia. En el país hay más de 2.000 volcanes, de los cuales unos 500 han sido clasificados por expertos como potencialmente activos. De estos, entre 50 y 60 poseen registro de erupciones.
