Argentina's CNEA ordered not to reopen Sierra Pintada uranium mine

Published by MAC on 2009-03-03

Argentina's Federal Chamber of Appeals, in the province of Mendoza, has ordered the state-owned Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA) not to re-open the Sierra Pintada uranium mine, inactive since 1995, claiming it would be potentially harmful to the environment.

A powerful coalition of vinters, organic farmers and local business people have been fighting the reopening of the mine for the past five years.
